2021 Burroughs Education $2,500 Scholarship Winner Announced
Woodruff Johnson & Evans Law Offices is the proud sponsor of the 2021 Burroughs Education Scholarship. The $2,500 scholarship is awarded each year to a college bound senior who is the child of a parent or guardian working in an Illinois school. This years’ scholarship recipient is a senior at Vandalia Community High School, Lauren Hagy.
Lauren maintains an outstanding GPA while participating in a number of extracurricular activities including Interact, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and National Honors Society. Lauren plays volleyball, basketball and enjoys creative pursuits such as painting and writing.
Lauren’s future plans are to attend Illinois State University to further her education in Communication Sciences and Disorders. Her goal is to become a Speech-Language Pathologist or an Audiologist. As a Speech-Language Pathologist, Lauren will work within schools to help children that have communication disorders and speech impediments. “Helping others is very important to me because I want others to feel more confident and comfortable in their everyday lives. Speaking and hearing is something that people use every single day and being able to help others fix their speech and hearing problems gives me a sense of hope that each person will be inspired to help others in ways throughout their life as well.” Lauren states, “Being able to guide others to improve themselves is what I look forward to most of all. I believe that kindness towards others is what is most important in life. I am forever grateful for the support and love I have received throughout my life from my family and friends.”
The Burroughs Education Scholarship is named in honor of Dr. Stacy Burroughs, who has dedicated his life to education. After many years of teaching in the classroom, he went on to represent teachers and support professionals on behalf of the Illinois Education Association. In 1985, Dr. Burroughs was named the first IEA Educational Support Professionals’ Director, a position in which he thrived until he retired in 2010. As the ESP Director, he worked to bring recognition to the contributions support professionals, such as custodians, bus drivers, and cooks, make to the education system every day across the state. Dr. Burroughs devoted his career to training, representing, and advocating for school employees. This scholarship recognizes the dedication and hard work of school employees, including Lauren’s mother, Kari, a School Guidance Counselor, by assisting their children in their educational pursuits. Woodruff Johnson & Evans Law Offices is proud to sponsor the Burroughs Education Scholarship, and proud to help Lauren on her worthwhile journey.
