2024 Burroughs Education $2,500 Scholarship Winner Announced
Woodruff Johnson Evans & Haugen Law Offices is proud to announce that Remington Kay Eileen Collins of Rock Falls, Illinois, is the winner of the 2024 Burroughs Education Scholarship.
Every year, WJEH awards a $2,500 scholarship to a graduating high school senior whose parent or guardian is employed by an Illinois school. It is the firm’s way of recognizing the hard work of teachers, support staff and others who work in the education field.
Remington, the daughter of an 8th grade special education teacher, attended three years at Rock Falls High School and is currently studying opera as a senior at the Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan. Her future holds college and then, hopefully, a career in music.
“Music in itself is its own language, providing a way to communicate something bigger than ourselves to vast groups of people,” Remington said. “My career objective as an opera singer is to passionately and consistently communicate the deeper meanings of song with communities internationally.”
Remington said she strives to challenge audiences to think outside their comfort zone. It was the way she was raised by her mother, Sara Stanley-Collins.
“I grew up under the wings of an Illinois educator, a woman, who was the only provider for my household,” Remington recalled. “My mother taught me to appreciate the importance of sitting in discomfort with new ideas through the beauty that is education.”
In addition to her study of opera, Remington takes part in Thespians, Spanish club, speech team and band. She plays clarinet and serves as drum major.
The Burroughs Education Scholarship is named in honor of Dr. Stacy Burroughs who has devoted his career to education, teaching music at the middle and high school levels, as well as supervising student teachers at the University of Illinois in Springfield. The latter part of his career was spent educating and supporting teachers through the Illinois Education Association.
