Burroughs Education $2,500 Scholarship Winner Announced
Woodruff Johnson & Evans Law Offices, sponsors of the Burroughs Education $2,500 Scholarship, is excited to announce this year’s scholarship winner, Olivia Howard.
As a senior at Naperville Central High School, Olivia maintains an outstanding GPA while simultaneously leading and participating in a number of extracurricular activities. Besides serving as her class president, playing varsity basketball and track, and leading her Euro Challenge team to the national competition at the New York Federal Reserve, Olivia dedicates her time to empowering those in need around the world. Through her Capstone project, Olivia studies the challenges faced by young women in the education system in South Sudan, working with NGOs and other experts around the world to address educational system barriers. Letitia Zwickert, Olivia’s social studies teacher, applauds Olivia for her work with the Chicago Public Schools’ refugee support program and praises Olivia for being one of the most passionate students, both inside and outside the classroom, that she has ever taught.
The Burroughs Education Scholarship is named in honor of Dr. Stacy Burroughs, who has dedicated his life to education. After many years of teaching in the classroom, he went on to represent teachers and support professionals on behalf of the Illinois Education Association. In 1985, Dr. Burroughs was named the first IEA Educational Support Professionals Director, a position in which he thrived until he retired in 2010. As the ESP Director, he worked to bring recognition to the contributions which support professionals, such as custodians, bus drivers, and cooks, make to the education system every day across the state.
Dr. Burroughs devoted his career to training, representing, and advocating for school employees. This scholarship recognizes the dedication and hard work of school employees, including Olivia’s mother, Sue, an English teacher at Hinsdale South High School, Olivia’s stepmother, Mary, an English teacher at Community High School in West Chicago, and Olivia’s father, Jeffrey, a principal at Lisle High School, by assisting their children in their educational pursuits. Woodruff Johnson & Evans Law Offices is proud to sponsor the Burroughs Education Scholarship.
