Former Navy Pilot Files $35M Suit Over Misdiagnosis
Steven M. Sandler of Woodruff Johnson & Evans Law Offices Law Offices in Chicago represents a United States military veteran in a lawsuit filed against the United States government in the federal district court in Kansas City, Missouri.
The client, a former U.S. Navy combat pilot, is suing the government for $35 million dollars following a medical misdiagnosis by the Kansas City Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center.
The client served in the Navy from 1986 through 1997, when he was honorably discharged. He flew combat missions in Desert Storm in Iraq. He was later shot down by friendly fire during a training exercise in the pacific. After his discharge, he was hired in 1998 as a pilot by a major airline, where he was employed until 2004.
In 2004, a VA doctor diagnosed him with bi-polar disorder, medically grounding him as a commercial pilot. He was treated for more than ten years before another VA doctor discovered he never had that condition.
Attorney Sandler is a certificated pilot and adjunct professor at the DePaul Law School where he teaches aviation product liability law. He represents flight crew, cabin crew, and passengers and their families in aviation litigation matters, ranging from aviation accident cases to other matters relating to aviation-related issues.
