2020 Burroughs Education $2,500 Scholarship Winner Announced
Woodruff Johnson & Evans Law Offices is the proud sponsor of the Burroughs Education $2,500 Scholarship. The scholarship is awarded each year to a college bound senior who is the child of a parent or guardian working in an Illinois school. This years’ winner is Mordecai “Mo” Park.
A senior at Naperville Central High School, Mo maintains an outstanding GPA while participating in a number of extracurricular activities including Marching Band and Breakthrough Ministries. Mo plans to pursue a Doctorate of Physical Therapy Degree. As a brother with three siblings Mordecai says that “With this scholarship, I can pursue my dream of becoming a physical therapist and also give back to the community around me.” Physical Therapy has been a career goal of Mo’s after an injury required physical therapy treatments. He began shadowing visits with the therapist at the treating facility. Mo says that he instantly knew that physical therapy was for him. To give back to his community, Mo plans to work at various pro bono clinics offered through the Doctorate of Physical Therapy programs. He also plans on continuing to pursue his musical studies as a music performance minor in percussion ensembles. Mo explains that he expresses himself through melodies on the marimba and finds refuge and stress relief playing the drums.
The Burroughs Education Scholarship is named in honor of Dr. Stacy Burroughs, who has dedicated his life to education. After many years of teaching in the classroom, he went on to represent teachers and support professionals on behalf of the Illinois Education Association. In 1985, Dr. Burroughs was named the first IEA Educational Support Professionals’ Director, a position in which he thrived until he retired in 2010. As the ESP Director, he worked to bring recognition to the contributions which support professionals, such as custodians, bus drivers, and cooks, make to the education system every day across the state. Dr. Burroughs devoted his career to training, representing, and advocating for school employees. This scholarship recognizes the dedication and hard work of school employees, including Mo’s mother, Janet, a 3rd grade teacher at Elmwood Elementary School, by assisting their children in their educational pursuits. Mo’s father, Jong, serves as a minister. Woodruff Johnson & Evans Law Offices is proud to sponsor the Burroughs Education Scholarship, and proud to help Mo on his worthwhile journey.
